Why does it always rain on me? Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman and Amanda Abbington film Sherlock in torrential downpour

Torrential rain would keep most people firmly indoors, but the stars of Sherlock were forced to endure foul weather on Sunday to continue filming the hotly-anticipated new series.

Benedict Cumberbatch tried to put on a brave face as he huddled with cast and crew members under giant umbrellas on the central London set in between scenes.

Despite precautions, the 39-year-old actor got soaked during the downpour and his character's trademark great coat provided little protection.

Cumberbatch's dark brown locks had been styled into Sherlock's trademark bouncy curls, but appeared to have been flattened by the wet conditions after striding around the set.

At one point he sheltered with actress Sian Brooke, who is joining the cast and wore a striking red dress, under the canopy of the now famous Speedy's Sandwich Bar.

The cafe, on North Gower Street in Bloomsbury, is next door to the stand-in for Sherlock's home - 221B Baker Street.

Also on location was Martin Freeman, who plays famous sidekick Dr Watson, and his on-screen wife and off-screen partner Amanda Abbington.

Freeman managed to keep dry and looked casual in a dark jacket over a grey shirt, jeans and tan shoes.

While Abbington was dressed stylishly in a patterned blue shirt, jeans and a pair of white trainers.

The actress later thanked fans who had travelled to watch filming and wrote on Twitter: 'A huge thank you to everyone who came down to set today. A pleasure meeting you all. Massive love and hope you got home safe.'

There is speculation that this season will see the return of Sherlock's nemesis, Professor James Moriarty.

And viewers will witness Freeman's character become a father for the first time.

In a statement from the writers and executive producers of the show when filming first started in April, Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat said: 'Sherlock series four - here we go again.

'Ghosts of the past are rising in the lives of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson bringing adventure, romance and terror in their wake. This is the story we've been telling from the beginning. A story about to reach its climax.'
